Helping New Informaticians
We are excited to announce the release of our first e-learning course, Touring the HL7 V2 Message! The self-paced course is free for all and can be completed on any device in about two hours. In this course, we'll explore the HL7 V2 message. We'll learn how data is communicated between healthcare providers and how the HL7 V2 message is organized and structured. You will learn how to read the HL7 V2 message and understand the key fields in an HL7 message. This course is a great introduction to messaging, or a refresher course for individuals working with HL7 V2 messages.
This is the first of many e-learning courses that JMC plans to release. Public health organizations are looking for creative ways to develop their workforce and train the next generation of informaticians. If you have thoughts about what you’d like to see as the next e-learning course, please reach out to us! We also offer customized onsite and remote training for your staff.
HL7 is highly technical, and the messaging standard was developed to be machine-readable, not human-readable. However, we as informaticians must be able to read and understand HL7 V2 messages in order to troubleshoot messaging structure and content errors. The goal of this course is to help orient new informaticians to the HL7 V2 message structure and take a deep dive into message content.
There are no prerequisites for this course, but if you are new to the world of informatics, we recommend you watch our video, "Introduction to HL7 and the V2 Standard" available at jmichael-consulting.com/resources.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Distinguish between segments and fields commonly used in an HL7 V2 message.
Summarize the commonly used data types in an HL7 V2 message.
Evaluate the structure and content of an HL7 V2 message to determine whether or not the message is valid.
